As one of America's fastest-growing and most in-demand industries, hospitality can offer jobseekers good opportunities to develop their career and quickly advanced into senior management. That is the opinion of Don Shindle, general manager and regional vice-president of Westin Verasa hotels, who has 30 years' experience in the sector at almost every level. He told St Helen Star that working in hospitality can give people "tremendous" prospects. Another industry insider, Steve Andrews of Villagio Inn and Spa, said the growth of the industry meant demand for qualified staff is high and those with management qualifications can quickly work their up to senior positions. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers in the field of hospitality management can include positions such as food service manager, executive chef, lodging manager and hotel manager. Some larger hotel establishments also have specific managerial roles overseeing different areas of operation, such as accommodation, food and drink, housekeeping and security. In 2006, around 1.8 million people were employed in the US hotel industry, the bureau said. By 2016, this number is expected to increase by 14%.  |
