People who have been out of work for a while may want to explore opportunities in the hospitality sector, as the industry is expected to grow in the coming years. According to the Department of Labor (DOL), the prospects for careers in hotel and hospitality are expected to be excellent, as many new hotels are scheduled to open. Writing for MarketWatch, Ruth Mantell suggests that people who have not been in employment for a period of time should re-evaluate their skills and consider going back to school to make them more marketable. Many community colleges, junior colleges and universities offer certificate or degree programs in hotel management. Technical institutes and vocational schools also may offers courses that lead to certification. Classes undertaken by students in these courses include hotel administration, accounting, economics, marketing, housekeeping, food service management and hotel maintenance. Additional skills that are helpful for this profession include the ability to get along well with a variety of people, manage stress, solve problems and learn quickly. The most recent data from the DOL indicates that lodging managers earn a median salary of $42,320. |
