Working in hospitality and hotel management means a graduate is part of a truly international industry that can offer career opportunities at home and abroad. Janpieter Martens told the Royal Gazette that his own interest in the hospitality industry was sparked during his childhood, when he spent a lot of time on the road due to his father's job. After studying a degree in hotel management, Mr Martens went to work in the sector in the United States before eventually taking up a post in Bermuda - a popular vacation spot for American tourists. Having previously worked as a general manager of a hotel on the island, he will now draw on his own globe-trotting experiences as the new president of the Bermuda Hotels Association, where he will be responsible for promoting the island's hospitality sector on the world stage. Wherever he has worked, Mr Martens said there are some constants in the hospitality industry, such as the need to effectively communicate with staff in order to maintain high standards of guest services. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a bachelor's or master's degree in hotel or hospitality management is required to gain entry to most major hotel chains' graduate training programs. |
