Graduates in the pharmacy sector can look forward to ample opportunities with high earnings, according to projections. The Department of Labor (DOL) predicts that the role of pharmacist will be one of the fastest-growing occupations during the 10-year period ending with 2016, with opportunities rising by 22%. Reasons for this trend include an aging population, an increasing number of scientific advances and more coverage of prescription drugs by insurance plans and Medicare. Speaking at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy's commencement, David L Maher echoed this forecast, assuring graduates they are entering a growing industry. "All of you are the most wanted and needed people on the planet. While many jobs are eliminated and outsourced, yours is just the opposite and that need will only increase in this global economy," he said, according to the Telegram & Gazette. Meanwhile, Charles F Monahan, president of the college, said that many students can expect starting salaries of around $110,000. Meanwhile, the latest statistics from the DOL estimate the median earnings for the profession as $94,520, though this figure may vary considerably based on location and employer. Prospective pharmacists should pursue a Pharm.D. degree from an accredited college or school of pharmacy. |
