Pharmacists 'must be detail-oriented'
20 February 2008
Would-be pharmacists should make sure they have a mind for detail and can work well in a fast-paced environment.

Lori Clemmens-Funke told the Battle Creek Enquirer that the biggest challenge of her job is keeping on top of all the changes in the pharmaceutical industry and making sure "the patient is getting exactly what they need".

However, she also explained that the career is very rewarding, saying: "I get to continue learning, continue growing and I get to continue being a blessing to others."

The main responsibilities of a pharmacist include advising patients and health practitioners about drugs and monitoring how patients progress with their medications.

Training for the career usually includes a doctorate in pharmacy, according to the American Pharmacists Association, which is usually preceded by various science courses at college. Jobs are available in a variety of settings, such as drug stores, hospitals, long-term care facilities and the pharmaceutical industry.

Pharmacists held around 243,000 jobs and had a median salary of 94,520 in 2006, Department of Labor data reveals.
