The number of students who are taking classes online has been growing each year, due to the level of flexibility such courses provide. Commenting on the possibilities offered by web-based learning, Minnesota education commissioner Morgan Brown told Minnesota Public Radio that "the whole advantage of online learning is that there's a flexibility in terms of the timeframe". There could be a variety of reasons that a student needs this flexibility. Health concerns, childcare needs or job commitments are just some of the motivating factors that make this type of learning more convenient than a traditional classroom setting. Additionally, many students may find that distance learning saves them money, as they do not have to pay for transportation, housing or food - all costs that are typical of a traditional university option. Many people also keep their existing job while they study. However, Northwestern University's Center for Talent Development recommends that before embarking on a distance learning program, students should first make sure they fulfil certain criteria. They should be self-starters who are able to motivate themselves to complete assignments and study independently. They should also make sure that they actually have adequate time to commit to the classes because, although physical presence is not required, there is often the same amount - or a larger amount - of coursework for online classes. |
