A career in teaching can be rewarding both personally and professionally - and it also gives opportunities for lifelong learning. Susan Grove, who will retire from a 30-year teaching career this spring, told postbulletin.com that a working life teaching others has given her a constant desire to improve her own education. "I'm a perpetual student," she said. Ms Grove, who taught a variety of subjects including English and French, also said that teaching allowed her to work abroad through study programs like English as a Second Language, as well as making a central part of the community back home through volunteer work and helping students develop both academically and socially. Furthermore, it has taught her that "everybody has a story" and people can often defy expectations. "I just hope I can keep learning," she commented. According to the US Department of Labor, teaching can offer a number of challenges but it can also be an important and rewarding career. In 2006, there were around four million teachers working at levels from preschool to secondary school in the US. In the decade to 2016, an additional 479,000 teaching posts are expected to be created. |
