Security Jobs a Growth Area
26 March 2008
The security sector is likely to continue to provide a number of opportunities in the near future, according to predictions.

Writing on CNN.com, Rachel Zupek suggests that "there will always be a need for security" in a variety of locations, including airports, at the US borders and within private companies.

In addition, she cites targets within the Defence Department and the Department of Homeland Security that estimate around 83,000 jobs need to be filled within the next two years, according to a report by the Partnership for Public Service.

Indeed, the Department of Labor (DOL) echoes this prediction, forecasting that increased homeland security needs will lead to a boost in demand for employees to fill vacant positions within the government.

And a Partnership for Public Service study found that the majority of new hires in the Federal Government would likely fall within areas including security and enforcement and compliance - which also includes police officers, airport screeners and prison guards.

Training for government security jobs mirror that of those in the private sector, according to the DOL, with a four-year degree preferred. Applicants must be US citizens and be the subject of a background check.

According to clearancejobs.com, job candidates who needed security clearance saw their salaries rise from an average of $68,139 in 2006 to $72,803 in 2007. It also found that those working within homeland security had the highest job satisfaction of any other government position requiring clearance.
