Demand for recruits at the Department of Homeland Security is on the rise as the government agency expands and develops its protection of the nation. Careers with the department are expected to grow by between 12% and 21% over the next four years and as a result, the federal government will need more qualified graduates to fill these important positions. In response, a number of colleges around the country are introducing specializations in degrees relating to the department's work, such as criminal justice. CarieAnn Potenza, director of the school of justice studies at one such institution, Rasmussen College, said: "There is a significant need for highly trained, properly educated Homeland Security professionals in this country." She added that people interested in working with Homeland Security should give studying a criminal justice degree "serious thought", as it will equip them with the foundations they need for the demands of protecting the country. According to figures from the Department of Homeland Security, the average salary of its employees is $48,000, although this varies by experience and training. |
