Counselors 'have the chance to make a difference'
07 February 2008
A school counselor has the opportunity to make a big impact on students' lives, helping them achieve more at school and make decisions about the future.

At the same time, Professor Becky Brannock, coordinator of the school counseling program at Penn State, wrote in the Morning Sun that the career requires people to take on a wide variety of roles, from day-to-day schedule coordination to crisis intervention.

She said that those who begin a career in counseling can expect an array of responsibilities, which - in addition to one-on-one counseling - may include group sessions, consultation, collaboration, assessment, placement services and program development.

Though the list may seem vast, Professor Brannock added that each of these tasks contributes to students fulfilling their potential and helps make a difference.

There are more than 100,000 school counselors in the US, according to the American School Counselor Association.
