Counseling a Fast-Growing Career Sector
22 April 2008
Those who are interested in pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in counseling are likely to find abundant job opportunities, according to new data.

The most recent analysis from the Department of Labor (DOL) suggests that the role of substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselor is among the top 10 fastest-growing careers. Employment is expected to rise by 34% over the 10-year period ending in 2016, which is much faster than the average for all professions.

Substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors focus on helping people who have problems with drugs, alcohol, gambling or eating disorders. In addition to working with individuals, counselors may participate in sessions with groups or family members affected by these dependencies.

Counselors need to have a high level of energy - both emotionally and physically - to deal with people's problems and avoid suffering from stress. They should also be trustworthy and able to inspire respect.

According to the DOL, substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors hold around 83,000 jobs. The predicted increase in vacancies is attributed to the fact that more people are gaining knowledge about addiction and treatment options.
