A career in IT consultancy can offer good salaries and the chance to work on exciting projects but successful professionals need to have good interpersonal skills as well as technological know-how. In Computer Weekly, IT recruitment specialist Julia Harvie-Liddel said good consultants need to be a team player capable of "influencing and driving things forward". They also have to be good communicators, as people skills are "much more important" than in many other IT roles, where the focus is more on technology and technical ability. However, as well as communicating, fellow recruiter Linda Jureidini-Cox said, people considering a career in IT consultancy also have to be good listeners who can turn ideas into "practical solutions" for their clients. Figures from the Department of Labor show consultancy roles in management, scientific and technical fields such as IT are among the fastest-growing occupations in the country, as well as one of the highest paying. It added that jobs in the field are expected to grow by 78 per cent in the decade to 2016 - with IT set to be one of the main areas of expansion due to the increase in new computer software and technology. |
