Lazing the summer away might seem likely a very tempting option for new graduates but taking some time to network and career skills can help put degree holders ahead of the pack come fall. Writing on the Huffington Post website, Lindsey Pollak said there are a number of things jobhunters can do to help their chances of landing a job without sacrificing some time in the sun. Networking on the terrace or at a BBQ is just as effective as meeting in the office - and the people you want to meet may be more inclined to meet for an al fresco lunch rather than in a stuffy office, she said. Furthermore, setting up email news alerts for specific companies or sectors will ensure you automatically get the latest from your chosen occupation - meaning you can "research" from the beach. Graduates should also take some time to brush up their online profile, Ms Pollak said, as employers are increasingly checking applicants' Facebook and MySpace profiles. Once your social profile is cleaned up, register with professional networks to make more connections, she advised. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, companies plan to hire 8% more graduates this year compared to 2007. |
