Resumes 'should be short and to the point'

Job-hunters are advised to resist the temptation to turn their resumes into mini-novels that describe everything they have ever done.

Kim Batson, founder of CareerManagementCoaching.com, told serachCIO.com that employers will initially scan the top third of an applicant's resume to see if they are worth pursuing.

"Many hiring authorities are reviewing resumes on mobile devices. They might be on the train. They certainly are not going to wander through four pages," she explained.

Ms Batson suggested that people think of ways they could differentiate themselves from the crowd and include these early on. These skills and achievements should be listed in bullet-point form, keeping the document short and to the point.

Martha Heller of Z Resource Group echoed this advice, adding that creating a concise and convincing resume could help candidates show employers they are able to communicate effectively.

She recommended that the ideal resume is two and a half pages or less in length and focuses on most recent employment, with an emphasis on promotions and achievement.

The Department of Labor suggests that job applicants that have not been in work recently could list volunteer experiences on their resumes to demonstrate relevant experience.
