LiveCareer News - Gap Years Offer Adventure, New Skills

Gap Years Offer Adventure, New Skills
20 August 2008
Taking a gap year before studying for a degree can improve students' chances of graduating, reduce the overall cost of their education and aid their chances of a successful career.

According to Chronicle Live, thousands of students opt for a gap year before college, spending their time traveling, gaining work experience or volunteering at home or abroad.

Many develop new skills through volunteering programs with organizations such as the Peace Corps, while others find that their study break gives them time to assess what they want to study and where they want to go career-wise.

Rebecca Jordan of gap year and volunteering website Gapwork said many also develop better self-discipline and focus, setting them "in better stead" for study or work. Gap year experiences can also boost a resume, she added.

Furthermore, according to the New York Times, a gap year can make good financial sense, as those who take a year out are less likely to drop out of college or repeatedly change their major, which can extend the time taken and cost of graduating.

The publication said the average cost of a gap year is between $10,000 and $12,000.
