The early stages of a person's career provide many opportunities to explore a variety of different professional paths. Kelly Wendleton, president of career coaching organization The Five O'Clock Club, explained that it may be important for younger job-seekers to try different positions to determine which one best suits them, Fox News reports. "To be successful and satisfied, you need to develop both self-awareness and an awareness of the world," Ms Wendleton said. She warned people against choosing a career based on other people's expectations or a misleading view of the industry portrayed in the media. Employees will be "happier and more successful" if they select a job based on their "interests, abilities and values", she added. Ms Wendleton cited research which stated that the average US worker who has graduated from college can anticipate moving through five careers over their lifetime. According to the Department of Labor, around ten million employees changed occupations between January 2005 and 2006, while workers reported staying with the same employer for a median of four years. |
