Because they play such a central role in a variety of firms, the demand for all types of accountants is typically strong and consistent. Bob Hatcher, director of permanent placement services for Robert Half Finance and Accounting in Indianapolis, told the Asbury Park Press that certain positions are especially sought-after. "The biggest demand is in internal auditor and candidates for public accounting," he explained. "The reason we see the market remaining resilient is because these are the bread-and-butter core of a company finance department." Internal auditors, who are usually employed by publicly traded companies, help improve financial reporting controls, audit financial statements and protect the firm's assets. Qualities that are important for auditors include good communication skills, an understanding of business systems, the ability to partner with management and a strong aptitude for numbers. Auditors should pursue a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field and can expect to earn between $38,885 and $109,500 annually, depending on experience, according to Robert Half. Location and type of employer may also impact upon salaries. |
