A career as a chartered accountant can give graduates the opportunity to work in a number of different areas and with people from all works of life. Michael E Lee, a chartered accountant of 38 years standing, told Metro News that this level of variety, plus the lucrative salaries on offer, is what drew him to the profession. He advised individuals considering entering the field that they need an "aptitude for numbers and logical thinking", as well as great time management skills, an eye for detail and accuracy, and high ethical standards. "One's integrity must be above reproach," he said. He added that the growth in domestic and international business means accountancy also offers good job security. According to the US Department of Labor, a bachelor's degree is required to enter the field of accounting or auditing. In 2006, it said, there were 1.3 million accountants and auditors working the United States. This figure is projected to grow by a faster-than-average 18 per cent in the ten years to 2016. DOL figures show that in May 2006, the median average wage for accountants and auditors was $54,630, with variations by specific roles and location. |
